Manuela Salgueiro Lourenço is a Brazilian image designer and visual artist currently based in New York City. Her practice is always carried out by research and a strong multidisciplinar approach.

In 2016, she graduated in architecture at Escola da Cidade, in São Paulo, when she had her first experience working with photography, assisting American photographer Jon Lowenstein, on a Nikon commissioned project about Brazil’s economic rise during Lula’s government. In 2013, she received a fellowship from Escola da Cidade to develop an academic research paper: 'The Construction of the City's Image – Through Photographic Narratives'. That’s when she began using photography and walking as tools to discuss interests such as landscape, territory, place identity and memory. Her architecture school final project ‘The Espigão and its Windows: Possibilities in the Void’ - a walking exploration of São Paulo’s remnant spaces with non obstructed views of the horizon line - was selected to be part of the São Paulo’s Biennial permanent archive and was on display at Mario de Andrade Public Library, during the Architecture Biennial event in 2017.

During architecture school, she started working as a graphic designer, which she continued doing after graduating in 2016. After that, she spent one year working as an art director in CJ31 design studio in São Paulo. By the end of 2017, she started her career as a freelancer, working both with graphic and set design on a range of advertising campaigns for clients like Tums, Youtube, Vick, Oracle and more. Since 2019, she also splits her time with photography projects, doing job assistances and commissioned projects.

In 2021, she received a Director’s Fellowship to study Photography at the International Center of Photography, in New York, where she has been working on two different projects; the first one entitled ‘There Will Be Something There’, comprising of a journey of becoming intimate with New York City. The second one is a set of different self-portrait series, assessing the tension of being in-between psychological spaces, and its physical unfoldings.
