Desestrutura

The digital Architecture platform, Desestrutura, was created in 2020 by Laura Belik, Berkeley PhD Architecture student. It was created to foster different discussions on Architecture and related topics.
During the Pandemic period, the website launched some open calls. I was invited to participate in the 2nd call, Corpo Confinado (Confined Body), which proposed a reflection on the different states that the body has been going through under the new circumstances.
From a conversation during the confinement period, I recovered memories of my childhood that had the table and the discomfort generated by the rules of etiquette in its center and created a diagram.

Território Guarani, São Paulo, Brasil

Ana Tranchesi

My friend Ana invited me to photograph her work. For two days, I registered the process of installing a road sign in the division between municipalities, which says Guarani Territory above and below. The idea was to promote a reflection on the occupation and colonization of the territory in the largest city in Brazil, São Paulo, which restricted the native indigenous population to natural reserves that are under increasing political pressure.

Instead of saying São Paulo above and Guarani Territory below, the sign says Guarani Territory twice, suggesting that everything in that space is originally indigenous land. The Tekoa Itakupe Indigenous Reserve has been the target of real estate speculation for the past two years and in June 2020 part of its land caught fire, in yet another case of State neglection.

Ana is a visual artist, architect and researcher, who lives between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Her search revolves around. In parallel to a Master's degree in Contemporary Arts, she continues collaborating with Paulo Tavares and working as a scenographer with the artists Laura Vinci and Flora Belotti, for the Mundana Theater Company.
In her work she seeks to investigate and deepen the dimension of the word and its poetic-visual unfoldings, seeking to problematize territorial and subjective limitations in the face of the Latin American spatial and political context.

Starting from the meaning of the word memory - 1. the ability to remember information, experiences and people; - the idea of these series of images is to try to recapitulate and in a parallel movement, to recreate my childhood memories, so linked to this place which appears in the photographs - my grandfather's farm. The absence of a precise object in the pictures relates to the fact that our memories are not always clear, being most of the times blurred and abstract. They get lost and are reconstructed in a continuous movement.

2013

São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil

In 2013, during the 10th Architectural Bienal of São Paulo, I participated of a two days 50km walk around São Paulo, organized by the Arquipélagos Urbanos Collective, an iniciative by Renato Hofer and Tais Ribeiro. We crossed the city from West to East, starting from the Pico do Jaraguá (Jaraguá Peak), in the Western border of the city, and walking in the direction of the Patriarca Neighbourhood, in the Eeastern side of São Paulo. We spent the night in the central area, where we slept in the mezzanine of IAB's (Institute of Brazilian Architects) headquarters.

The experience of walking and exploring the territory through my own body deeply affected me and has defined a range of interests that I persue until nowadays. Along the track and its different stops, we were invited to register and feel the path however we wanted to. I opted to register my experience though Photography, as it is the language that I master. Afterwards, I realized that I had created many double exposure images, which after gave me the impression that, at the moment, in a single click, I wanted to be able to represent the various angles as seen by a pedestrian or all that I was able to visualize from a single point, thus, trying to build a global view of the place that surrounded me so that, afterwards, I could approprite it entirely.

I named this essay 'Duplicated City'.

O Espigão & Suas Janelas - Possibilidades No Vazio
Escola da Cidade
Architecture & Landscape
BA Architecture & Urbanism Thesis

2016

Marina Grinover

My Final Graduation Thesis 'O Espigão e suas janelas - Possibilidades no Vazio' (The Spike and its Windows - Possibilities in the Void) was a continuity of an Academic Research, that began in 2013, and which discussed the processes of cities's identity and image formation through photographic narratives, passing through issues such as the landscape, spatial visual elements and (collective) memory.

When I begun the final thesis project, it came naturally to me the idea of continuing to delve into these themes and to also be able to study other subjects that emerged in the course of my first research, such as walking, the body, its time and its speed. The research is constituted by 1. a brief overview on the window element in the history of architecture; 2. about the term landscape and 3. a mapping of the views that open to the horizon - to the remnants of the natural landscape of the city of São Paulo (such as Serra da Cantareira), - which came up through walking and the direct contact between the body and the city. Only the body is able, through space and at its own pace, to perceive the nuances and different layers of a city as multiple as São Paulo. Through the body's perspective, the views can be interpreted as large and important voids in the city, which must be preserved in order to give vent to the sight and therefore, able to be completed subjectively. Also, they guide the user and provide their location in the city.

I made photographic records and written reports of my crossings through Espigão (the highest elevation in the city of São Paulo), cataloged and mapped the places I found and, finally, I analyzed them through their specificities and potentialities in order to, later on, create a visual system, indicating their presence throughout this axis and a "guide for interventions" that would occupy the spaces, in order to keep these windows-views present. The result of the work is a book in which I present the theoretical research, the collected and analyzed material, and the project.

note: the publication was selected for the 11th São Paulo Architecture Biennial's open call Imaginário da Cidade (City's Imaginary), to participate in the Biennial's exhibition at the Mário de Andrade Library and integrate the permanent collection of the institution. Also, the illustration beside was selected for the open call Drawings at the Archdaily website, in 2018.

Visual Identitiy for Ababé

Graphic Design

2018

Ababé

Brand and visual identity developed for a natural, organic and manual soap brand, fruit of the partnership between two brothers, who are interested in manual making. Using simple techniques and essential oils, Ababé seeks to encourange self care and therefore self love.
Of yoruba origin, the word - a-ba-bé or a-be-be or a-be-be - means: a circular metalic ring with bells, which is at the same time an insignia and musical instrument of the orisha Oxum, divinity of the water of the lakes. The Ababé has a great meaning because when we are able to look at ourself, you can know ourself.
In Yoruba mythology, Oxum carries a golden Ababé, which differentiates from Iemanjá, who carries a silver Ababé. In Orixás' representations, Oxum always appears in yellow and golden garments.
Therefore, we chose to work with these same colors, using gold as the main color.
Keeping in mind the ideas of the female orisha Oxum, I decided to use a typography that could translate class and tradition. From elements present in the emblem of Oxum, the Ababé, and a brief research of other Orixás' amulets, their representations and forms, we opted to follow a “cleaner” path for the development of the logo, based on more slender lines and with few elements.

visual identity and signage project carried out at the office Conjunto 31 for the 8th photography exhibition, held annually at Vila Madalena, São Paulo and organized by DOC Galeria.

Ligia Monachini

Visual identity developed for a client who works with chinese medicine and as an aromatherapist. The project begun with the brainstorming and sketching of ideas that relate to these millenarian sciences. As in both currents, there is a huge concern with the realignment and balance of all chackras, I sought to develop a logo that was directly related to this, but which also resembled the idea of a drop, referring to the essential oils treatment.

Exposição Sérgio Bernardes - Open House

Art Direction
Art Director & Graphic Designer

2019

Eleonora Aronis

In 2019, the centenary of the Brazilian architect Sérgio Bernardes was celebrated. He was an important figure in the brazilian modernist movement, but, for political reasons, he is not so spoken of. In the 70's he found LIC, a laboratory that encouraged research and discussion about Brazilian territory.
My friend Lola, who has already developed a research about the architect and lives in a residence designed by him for her grandparents, invited me to help her set up an Open House weekend in honor of the architect.
I contributed by developing the graphic and exhibition project of the event, which featured an exhibition with original drawings, a Documentary about the architect, talks between architects and teachers and guided tours.

Mars

Graphic Design - Book Design - Visual Narratives

Designer & Photographer

2017

Mars was created for Valongo International Image Festival open call.
The idea was to make a publication using only existing images, a sustainable choice in a world flood and overpopulated by images. They were all found on the internet by typing the word mars in Google search bar.
The choice to use the word Mars was not random, I wanted to play with all the mistery, imaginary and meanings involving the red planet.
